India won 61 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022
In Birmingham, nearly 200 Indian athletes competed across 16 different sports during the Commonwealth Games 2022. India won 61 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2022, including 22 gold, 16 silver and 23 bronze. First Indian to win a medal at Birmingham was Sanket Sargar, who won silver in the 55kg weightlifting event. The first Indian to win gold at CWG 2022 was Mirabai Chanu, while the first Indian to win top podium at Birmingham was Jeremy Lalrinnunga.

Sudhir won India’s first gold medal in para sports at the CWG 2022. In the heavyweight category of parapowerlifting, he became the champion. Neeraj Chopra’s late withdrawal due to injury from CWG 2022 has certainly cost India a medal.

In the 2018 Gold Coast edition, Indian athletes finished third overall behind Australia and England, winning 66 medals in total: 26 gold, 20 silver, and 20 bronze.

Despite contributing 16 medals to Gold Coast 2018, shooting was not included in Birmingham 2022’s Games. India has won 135 medals in shooting at the Commonwealth Games – more than any other sport. The Indian shooters won 30 medals during the 2010 New Delhi Commonwealth Games, where India won 101 medals, their most successful games in history.

In shooting and Neeraj Chopra’s absence, the Indian wrestling contingent, including Olympians Ravi Kumar Dahiya, Bajarang Punia and Sakshi Malik, and a strong badminton team, led by two-time Olympian PV Sindhu and world champion Kidambi Srikanth and Lakshya Sen, were expected to propel the country to the medals table. The weightlifting team also carried the nation’s hopes.
